Well Water Network

A shared map of the world's wells, starting in Ireland.

Add A Well Open The Map

What is this?

Ireland is full of wells: holy wells, village wells, springs in the corner of a field, wells that were covered over and forgotten. Most are known only to the people who live near them. This is a place to write that knowledge down, together.

Anyone can look. Sign in with your email to add a well, confirm one someone else found, or add its names, its story and your photos. Every report is signed with a screen name, and a well becomes more certain as more people report it.

Can I visit a well?

Most wells are on private land. Unless someone has reported that a well is on public land, please do not visit it without the landowner's permission. Wells can also be deep or unstable, and this site says nothing about whether any water is safe to drink.

Who made this?

It is a free project with no advertising, inspired by the work of Charlotte Emily Rose, who has found and restored more than a hundred forgotten wells around Kinsale (her book is Well-Being). What you add is shared under a Creative Commons licence, so the record can outlive this website. More about the project.
